my taiwan trip

Our hotel in Ximending in Taipei is apparently very popular among Singaporeans because of its excellent location & cheap clean rooms. We were right smack in the shopping district & it was bustling even at midnight on weekdays. The energy in Taipei is so infectious!

The hotel breakfast was however quite blah.We opted instead for fresh soya milk & rice rolls with egg, bacon & dough bits from this roadside stall. I dont know how they handle the morning crowd plus 2 clueless irritating tourists who cant read vertically & still be so friendly & cheerful. Totally yummy!

These funny rock formations have become somewhat of a geological wonder.

We also made a trip to Wulai, a mountainous area known for its hot springs.

IMG_2497

My mum jumped from 17deg to 41deg to 36deg waters & got all red & healthy while i merely soaked & let my fatigue wash away from me. Because it was the low season, we were the only ones in the spring & stayed until our fingers became all crinkly.

It was also the calla-lily season up on Yangmingshan, the backyard mountail of Taipei & we joined the hordes of Taiwanese picking lilies in the cool crisp air.

Until now i have no idea if these colors are natural or not... but it certainly makes a beautiful rainbow bouquet!

I spent one night in Hualien, which is 2 hours away from Taipei by express train & on the eastern coast of Taiwan. It's a beautiful county & the people are soooo kind! We walked around the seaside & got a room facing the Pacific ocean. The owners, a very funny couple brought us to the mountain gorge the next day.

That night, we went to a local night market & bought real fireworks to set off on the beach!

IMG_2795

Seemed easy enough. We got the big rectangular package with 19 shots, just light the wick at the side & stand back. But we had visions of the box exploding in our faces & so a nice Taiwanese boy helped us & even told us not to be scared LOL.

IMG_2793IMG_2794

It was my first time seeing fireworks at such close range & so low in the sky. they felt like they were raining down on my head... everyone should try it once in their life!

The next morning we piled into a car & drove an hour into Taroko Gorge national park. It was formed over a hundred million years from the collision between the Eurasian plate & the Philippine sea plate, together with erosion from the Liwu river. Seeing that the owner's wife grew up in Hualien, she told us stories about the gorge & how they used to play there as kids.

IMG_2896

It was immense, breathtaking & the marble rock is so beautiful... you could stare forever at the lines & marvel at how nature by its sheer force & the passage of time made sediment & sand into amazing hard smooth marble.

IMG_2903

We had to wear helmets as the gorge is very prone to rock falls. I really admire Chiang kai-shek, former president of Taiwan for opening up the gorge & painstakingly carving roads in the side of the mountains for tourists to admire this work of nature. If you had seen first hand the height, the width, the harsh terrain of the gorge, you would have agreed that it was an arduous task. I apologise that my lousy camera could not capture the magnificence of the gorge. It is really a sight to behold.

If you are ever in Taipei, drop by this steamboat place called Ju-Xian for its collagen steamboat.. you can order lots of seafood & meat, then dump a whole bottle of collagen powder into the soup; very popular among females & the owner was so so nice we stayed to chat with her long after we finished.

I always thought Taiwan was just about night markets & Asian pop but this trip opened my eyes to its great abundance of nature & its beautiful coastline... not to forget the Taiwanese themselves. Having travelled to many places in Asia before, i know how to tell genuine kindness from commercial gestures & in my humble opinion, i think they're a lovely lot of people :)

i love taiwan!

How have you been?

I was away in Taipei for the past week... It was one of the most relaxing holidays i ever had. The people are so warm & polite... the country so easy to navigate & everyone speaks Mandarin so we did not feel out of place at all. I always felt i spoke good Mandarin but 9 out of 10 people thought we were from Hong Kong so i guess i need to brush up more!

I went with my mum & we soaked in hot springs, set fireworks along the coast, explored mountain gorges, stuffed ourselves silly with junk food at the night markets & fell in love with the Taiwanese people.

As with all vacations, i am so busy with post-vacay stuff but I will share with you my story very soon!

another night in taipei

Some taiwanese teen boy band on my flight... apparently their name in mandarin translates literally to Lollipop in english. They are so young! I think i'm older than all of them haha.
Was serving A his meal and cos B was asleep, i asked A, "Does the other Lollipop wanna eat?" Hahahahahahhaa slip of the tongue.

While the rest of the girls went crazy with the shopping, i relaxed with my magazines and watched TV.. I'm BORING i know.

Remember the Ah zong rice noodles i raved about previously? I stopped gobbling it to capture this vision on film. I swear this is my only motivation for the flight.

Love the crowds... light rain does not deter them at all.

Really great people on this flight!

shih-lin here i come again...

another night in Taipei..

Lining up for XXXL chicken at Shih-lin night market.. love the atmosphere there... food stalls everywhere, people jostling around, the cool night breezes, cheap shoes... it's like Bangkok's Chatuchak but the major difference is... the Taiwanese are always so nice and polite.

Check out the size of the chicken! Then its on to bubble tea and Ah Zong mian xian... flour noodles in a meaty sticky broth with pig's stomach and coriander and chilli. Oh my god... it's orgasm in a bowl man. I realised i didnt make it sound v nice but it is!

And its where i can stock up on girly stuff! So so cheap compared to Singapore. Hmph.

Taipei again!

Put me in Taipei & i'll go crazy. I love..

Roadside food stalls sellin all sorts of junk snacks

Scooping up cheap bargains at Wu fen pu market... can u believe i got all these tops for less than 10 SGD each? Although u cant try them on beforehand, they fit beautifully back at the hotel. I have decided that i will not shop at Ximending & Taipei 101 anymore. Cheap clothes here i come.

Cheap taxis to bring u everywhere.. And they dont disappear just before midnight

And my absolute fave, Huang Jia Huang beef noodles ha. No one does beef noodles like them. Plus the service is warm, unpretentious and sincere.

Taipei interlude

Just came back from a relaxing 2 days in Taipei... and watched countless TV shows.. i'm really amazed by the variety of TV progs they have there. The hotel room was great... and i didnt leave the room except to make a trip top Ximending, the hotspot of taiwanese teens.

While i was lining up to get the famous popcorn chicken, i was approached by this woman & a photographer from some magazine who wanted to take a pic of me. So i had to get outta the queue while they interviewed me for some column in their magazine. It was so funny when they were asking me what brand is my dress, etc... all i could think of was "The chicken queue is getting longer.. it's getting longer..." Haha. I'm really quite greedy yea.

Anyway it didnt even cross my mind to ask which mag they were from!I was so overwhelmed by the place... it reminds me of Causeway Bay in HK... just check out the number of people!

I loved the vibrancy of the place... but i was glad to return to my hotel room & indulge in some privacy. Lately ive been gettin tired easily... must be the post CNY blues. Alrighty have a good night!

First time to Taipei

Got called up for a flight to taipei over the weekend... it was fun fun fun! We head to Shih-Lin night market for yummy food & cheap shopping... i've always wanted to try the authentic XXL crispy chicken from taiwan ha. the long queue is testament to its popularity!

I've been so curious about ear candling but i still cannot bring myself to give it a try... least of all in front of so many people >_<

We spend hours browsing thru the shops full of taiwanese meimei wanting to make a quick tourist buck. We still fall prey to their persuasion & end up with bags & bags of clothes & shoes.

What comes after eating & shopping? Karaoke of course! We join a taiwanese colleague for some serious singing till the wee hours...

I'm dead beat... can't beat the taiwanese when it comes to karaoke... they are really champions & they take it so seriously! But i had a good time nonetheless... & well fed with juicy nuggets of taiwanese celeb gossip!
