we are so small #4 - Phytoplankton blooms

Phytoplankton blooms are best appreciated from space like these NASA photos & they remind us how beautiful our Earth is.

Mostly single-celled microscopic plants, they are abundant in cold nutrient-rich waters.

As they contain chlorophyll, these organisms convert water & CO2 into oxygen thru the process of photosynthesis in sunlight.

During certain times of the year, when conditions are ideal, phytoplankton reproduce so quickly that this population explosion changes the color of the sea in which they 'bloom', green mixing with blue.

There are so many things that we'll never understand fully about the ocean. But this weekend, if weather permits, James Cameron, the director of Titanic & Avatar will pilot his submarine into the depths of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on Earth. At a depth of 11km, pressure is over a thousand times the atmospheric pressure & it would be amazing to see what animals can survive at this depth where there is no light at all.

happy weekend x
